JEFFERSONVILLE – Archrivals New Albany and Jeffersonville
were involved in their second consecutive low-scoring pitchers’ duel in their
longtime series Wednesday night at Don Poole Field.
And for the second time in a row, the Bulldogs came out on
top.
Junior Ryan Robison led New Albany on the mound and the
plate in its 3-1 victory over the Red Devils. In the last meeting between the
Ohio River foes last May, the Bulldogs (5-6) edged Jeff 1-0 in the 2016 Class
4A Floyd Central Sectional championship game. The Red Devils’ winning streak
ended at four games.
Robison pitched a complete-game win to even his record at
2-2. The left-hander surrendered one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts
and one walk. In the batter’s box, he went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Red Devils (4-4) got on the scoreboard first. They
scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Jeff starter
Gabe Bierman collected an RBI single to plate junior Bailey Falkenstein.
The Devils collected three of their seven hits in the frame.
All of the knocks were singles.
New Albany tied the game at one in the top of the fifth.
Jonah Boone delivered a double that reached the left-field fence, knocking in
Dylan Clark.
The Bulldogs’ final two runs came in the top of the sixth.
Jacob Mullins scored from second base on Jeff’s second error of the frame to
put New Albany up 2-1. The Bulldogs got an insurance run later in the frame
when Steven Thom came home on a Robison sacrifice fly.
Bierman went the distance, giving up three runs (one earned)
on four hits. The Indiana University commit recorded seven strikeouts and
issued three walks as his record fell to 1-3. Bierman and Falkenstein each went
2-for-3.
Both teams will be back in action Saturday. New Albany will
travel to Evansville to face Evansville Reitz (10-3) at 11 a.m. EDT at
legendary Bosse Field. Jeff will visit Hoosier Hills Conference foe Bedford
North Lawrence at 11 a.m.
