JEFFERSONVILLE – On Monday night at Don Poole Field, Jeffersonville
started a challenging week on the wrong foot.
The host Red Devils allowed 12 hits in losing to defending
Class 2A state champion Providence 13-5. Jeff’s losing streak extended to three
games. After a home game with North Harrison on Tuesday, the Red Devils (4-6)
will host Louisville perennial power St. Xavier on Thursday and entertain Class
3A No. 1 Jasper on Friday. On Saturday, Jeff will travel to another Kentucky
perennial power in Pleasure Ridge Park.
Red Devil senior Cam Northern went 3-for-3 with a double and
two runs scored. Teammate Drew Taylor was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Jeff right-hander Jacob Cochrum got the loss, evening his
record at 2-2. The senior yielded eight runs (all earned) on seven hits,
walking four and striking out three.
Joe Wilkinson had a huge game at the plate for Class 2A No.
3 Providence (13-3). The sophomore was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs
scored. Wilkinson smacked a three-run home run in the top of the seventh
inning.
Teammate Juston Betz went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Also for
the Pioneers, Jake Lewis was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored and Reece
Davis ended up 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Davis was the winning pitcher as he kept his undefeated
record intact at 5-0. The junior threw a complete game, surrendering five runs
(three earned) on nine hits and three walks. Davis struck out four.
Providence will host Crawford County at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
