FOOTBALL: Smith leads Pioneers past Mitchell in 2A sectional semi 14-12

By GREG BURTON
Special to Southern Indiana Preps
CLARKSVILLE—Kevin Smith’s number got called often Friday night at Murphy Stadium, and he responded with big, impressive numbers of his own.
In Class 2A Sectional 39 semifinal action, the Providence junior running back ran roughshod over visiting Mitchell, helping the Pioneers edge the Bluejackets 14-12. The victory propels the Pioneers (6-5) to the sectional championship next Friday against Paoli (9-2). The title game will be played at Murphy Stadium, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
Friday’s game was similar in many ways to the teams’ meeting four weeks previously. In that game, each team was scoreless in the first half. But then Providence won that contest in the second half 27-8.
Providence failed to score again in the first half of this game, as Mitchell led 6-0 at halftime. The Pioneers then scored twice in the second half to win.
The person who did the most damage for the Pioneers was Smith, who ran the ball 26 times and accumulated 146 yards. Smith also scored the Pioneers’ two touchdowns.
The first score looked improbable, even as it happened. On the opening drive of the third quarter, Smith got the ball and ran into what appeared to be a pile of players. While most everyone watching waited for a whistle to blow to stop the action, Smith broke out of the pack and raced 37 yards into the end zone for the score.
Smith’s second score was the topper on a 15-play, 81-yard drive for Providence. His 1-yard run into the end zone with 11:14 left in regulation proved to be the game-winner.
The Pioneers led 14-6 at that point, but things got dicey at the end of the game. Mitchell (8-3) scored on a 2-yard run by Brandon Brazzell with 2:27 remaining. Providence stopped the two-point conversion run, and the Pioneers led 14-12.
Providence was forced to punt, and the Bluejackets took possession with 1:08 remaining. Mitchell started at its own 26-yard line.
Two pass interference calls were called against Providence. After Mitchell capitalized on some running plays, the Bluejackets had a first-and-10 at the Providence 16 with about 30 seconds to play.
Disaster then struck Mitchell. The Bluejackets were flagged for a chop block, sending the ball back to the Pioneer 41. On the next play, the Bluejackets fumbled the snap and Providence’s Brogan Welch recovered.
The Pioneers snapped the ball and took a knee, then the clock ran out as Mitchell had no timeouts remaining.

VOLLEYBALL: Pioneers end Floyd’s sectional title streak

By KEVIN HARRIS
NEW ALBANY – Entering the Class 4A New Albany Sectional semifinal Oct. 14 at The Doghouse, Floyd Central was determined to keep its four-year sectional championship streak alive.
The Highlanders claimed the first set against archrival Providence 25-15. But the defending Class 3A state runner-up Pioneers responded by taking the final three sets and the match 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20. Providence moved up to Class 4A this season because of the IHSAA’s success-factor rule.
With the Pioneers (34-1) up 9-8 in the opening set, Floyd Central (24-11) scored six consecutive points to take a five-point lead. The closest Providence got after that was four points.
“That might have been the best set of volleyball I’ve ever coached,” Highlanders’ head coach Bart Powell said.
After the first set, Pioneers’ head coach Terri Purichia had a talk with her team in The Doghouse’s foyer area.
“I said, ‘Everybody has a game plan. They have a game plan and we have a game plan. They’re successful in executing theirs and you are not,’” Purichia said. “I said, ‘My team did not show up. They did not come out of the locker room. There is no reason for you to be scared. You have to execute your game plan.’”
The Pioneers proved they received Purichia’s message loud and clear.
After falling behind 4-1 in the second set, Providence produced a 12-1 run to go up 13-5. The largest the Pioneers’ lead got in Set 2 was 10 points at 20-10.
In the third set with the score tied at 12, Providence took control with eight points in a row to take a 20-12 advantage. The closest Floyd Central got after that was six.
The Highlanders looked like they were going to force a fifth set as they held a 15-11 lead in Set 4. But with Floyd up 17-14, the Pioneers went on an 8-1 spurt to grab a 22-18 advantage.
“I knew that we would start out strong without question and we did,” Powell said. “But my fear was toward the end of (the first) set that we weren’t going to be able to keep that pace up. They got into a good serving groove.”
Purichia thought more aggressive serving by the Pioneers turned the tables for them.
“In the first set, we didn’t serve very well. We didn’t make any errors, but we didn’t serve as aggressively as we needed to to keep them out of their system,” Purichia said. “We just had to pick up our pace a little and I think we did that. It was just a really great match and a battle. It was fun to be a part of.”
Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Glotzbach led the Pioneers with 16 kills and four blocks. Providence senior Marissa Hornung wound up with 13 kills and seven digs.
Junior Hanna Mitchell was the third Providence player with double-digit kills with 10. Pioneer freshman Ali Hornung, Marissa’s sister, had nine kills and four blocks. Providence setter Lilly Bivens distributed 43 assists and teammate Ceci Rush served four aces.
Floyd senior outside hitter Alexis Smith ended her high school career with a solid performance, spiking 14 kills. Smith did not play in the Highlanders’ three-set home loss to the Pioneers on Sept. 13.
Highlander junior Cassie Thomerson smacked nine kills, while Floyd Central junior setter Sara Sans dished out 41 assists. Also for Floyd, Kristen Engle made 10 digs, Mia Swearingen had five blocks and Molly Ottersbach served four aces.
The Highlander seniors were Engle, Ottersbach, Smith, Swearingen, Addie Bullock and Rachel Whitehouse.

FOOTBALL: Fuller’s school-record night propels Jeff past Jennings 63-40

By KEVIN HARRIS
JEFFERSONVILLE – Jeffersonville senior Kam Fuller’s final regular-season home game last Friday at Blair Field was one for him to remember.
Fuller rushed for a school-record 389 yards on 17 carries to lead the Red Devils to a 63-40 victory over Hoosier Hills Conference rival Jennings County. The Jeff running back’s unbelievable performance helped the Red Devils (3-6, 3-4 HHC) rally from a 20-0 deficit in the second quarter.
Fuller bested the previous single-game school record, which was 327 rushing yards in 2008 by former Jeff standout Jamie Goldsmith, by 62 yards. Fuller scored four touchdowns, all coming on the ground.
The Panthers (2-7, 1-6) took their 20-point lead at the 8:20 mark of the second when quarterback Justin Rennemeier made a 7-yard touchdown run.
The Red Devils answered with 35 consecutive points, coming on five TDs, to go up 35-20. Fuller recorded three of the five scores on runs of 7, 32 and 59 yards. The other two touchdowns were a 45-yard run by sophomore Jeremiah Thornton and a 17-yard scamper by Devaca Parks.
Jennings County got back within two points at 35-33 with back-to-back TD passes by Rennemeier. But Jeff responded with 1:03 left in the third period as junior Isaac Hall made a 49-yard touchdown run to get its lead back to nine at 42-33.
After Beineke caught a 15-yard TD pass to pull the Panthers within 42-40 at the 9:41 mark of the fourth, the Devils reeled off 21 consecutive points to turn the contest into a blowout. Jeff got a 68-yard TD run from Fuller, a 23-yard TD reception by Parks from Hall and a 1-yard TD scamper by senior Cameron McClure.
The Red Devils rushed for 501 yards. Hall was 3-of-8 passing for 42 yards.

FOOTBALL: Pioneers’ rally falls short in 40-34 loss at Linton-Stockton

By KEVIN HARRIS
LINTON – Providence’s comeback attempt Friday night at defending Class A state champion Linton-Stockton came up short, as the Miners won 40-34. It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
Linton-Stockton (6-3), which moved up to Class 2A this season because of the IHSAA’s success-factor rule, extended its lead to 32-6 with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Lance Dyer.
Two huge plays by junior running back and safety Kaden Williams after the score got the Pioneers’ rally started.
Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards to the end zone at the 10:35 mark, slicing Providence’s deficit to 32-13. Almost two minutes later, Williams recovered a fumble and ran 44 yards to paydirt to get the Pioneers (4-5) within 12 points at 32-20.
With 3:26 remaining, quarterback Keaton Cox made a 1-yard touchdown run to get the Miners’ lead up to 38-20. Cox followed that by completing a pass to teammate Braiden Irish in the end zone for the two-point conversion to put the Miners up 40-20.
But Providence refused to go away quietly.
Senior Manny Schmidt made a 21-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Joe Denis at the 1:36 mark to trim the Pioneers’ deficit to 40-27.
With 21 seconds remaining, Providence blocked a punt to give it the ball at the Linton-Stockton 20-yard line. Eight ticks later, Denis connected with Schmidt on a 20-yard TD pass to pull the Pioneers within six.
But the Providence rally ceased when the Miners recovered an onside kick and ran out the rest of the clock.
Williams had 88 rushing yards and one TD on the ground on 11 carries. Denis completed 8-of-19 passes for 95 yards, while Schmidt had four receptions for 64 yards.
The Pioneers will travel to Perry Central (4-5) at 7:30 p.m. EDT next Friday in a first-round game in Class 2A Sectional 39.

FOOTBALL: Bulldogs get knocked out by rival Floyd Central 49-28

By GREG BURTON
Special to Southern Indiana Preps
NEW ALBANY — Like a boxer landing blow after blow and wearing his opponent down, Floyd Central pounded away at New Albany on Friday night at Buerk Field.
The Highlanders scored on nearly every possession and emerged as 49-28 winners in the Hoosier Hills Conference game and regular-season finale for both teams.
“Time of possession and keeping their potent offense off the field was the key to the game,” said Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing.
Class 5A No. 7 Floyd Central (7-2, 6-1 HHC) scored on each of its first four possessions, landing offensive blow after offensive blow on the host Bulldogs (5-4, 4-3).
“We were playing at times with about six or seven guys on defense,” said New Albany coach Steve Cooley. “They just powered us over, and we had trouble tackling their backs. We’ll go back to the drawing board on Monday and fix some things, and we’ll put 11 kids on there that know what their job is and do it.”
New Albany put together an 11-play drive to open the game. But it stalled at the Floyd Central 32-yard line, and the Bulldogs gave the ball up on downs.
Floyd Central capitalized immediately, and six plays later it scored on a 15-yard run by Devon Stikes. The drive got going with a Matt Weimer to Braxton Cerqueira pass for 21 yards. Stikes also had a 12-yard run and Zach Rodgers broke free for a 19-yard run, setting up Stikes’ TD run.
New Albany answered the bell with a score of its own when Darquan Richardson romped 45 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at seven.
That was about the end for the Bulldogs, though. On the ensuing kickoff, the Highlanders’ Brandon Stiegel returned the ball 80 yards for the score.
“The kickoff return they ran back for a touchdown, that was big,” said Cooley.
What happened next, though, may have been the beginning of the end. New Albany coughed up the ball on a fumble, and then Floyd Central put together a 10-play drive, ending with a Jason Cundiff 1-yard run for a score to put the Highlanders up 21-7 in the second quarter.
Floyd’s next possession lasted just three plays, the final one being a Weimer-to-Jon Gunn 68-yard completion for the score. At this point it appeared a rout was imminent, as the Highlanders led 28-7.
New Albany put points on the board with a little more than 3 minutes remaining in the half when Richardson found the end zone again. This time it was from 6 yards out, and the Bulldogs were within 14 points with 3:07 left before halftime.
Floyd Central was forced to punt — its only punt of the night — on its next possession. But New Albany failed to catch the punt. The ball rolled over 20 yards after hitting the ground, and the punt went for 54 yards total.
“There were little things,” said Cooley. “We shot ourselves in the foot tonight. We didn’t field that punt, and that made a huge difference in yardage. That was 26 yards we lost.”
The resulting yardage might have made a difference for the Bulldogs. They moved the ball down to the Floyd Central 25-yard line with enough time left for one play prior to intermission. However, an incomplete pass ended the half.
The third quarter fairly well told the tale of the game. Floyd Central had possession for every play except for four during the period. New Albany’s only possession resulted in a three-and-out, while the Highlanders ran 14 plays from scrimmage.
The only score of the third quarter was a Weimer-to-Cerqueira 43-yard touchdown, and the Highlanders led 35-14 going into the final period.
“Getting that stop at the end of the first half was huge,” said Glesing, “and then starting the second half we marched down the field and score and set the tone.”
“I knew going in we needed two stops in the first half for this to be a game,” said Cooley. “We needed to get off the field twice, and we didn’t.”
Floyd Central started the final quarter by continuing a drive it had begun in the third period. Three plays later, the Highlanders scored on a 3-yard run by Cundiff, making the score 42-14. New Albany scored twice in the final quarter. Richardson found the end zone for the third time on a 3-yard run. He scored for the fourth time later when he hooked up with Dylan Clark for a 22-yard score.
Floyd Central scored its final touchdown on a 34-yard run by Tyler Edwards. The Bulldogs recovered an onside kick after their final score, but gave the ball up on downs, essentially ending the game.
“We made some plays and tried to come back, but you can’t dig yourself a 49-point hole,” said Cooley.
Each team will have a first-round bye in the first week of Class 5A Sectional 15 action. Then they will face each other in the sectional semifinals Friday, Oct. 27 at Buerk Field.

FOOTBALL: Oppel leads Bulldogs past Seymour 35-20

By KEVIN HARRIS
SEYMOUR – On Oct. 6 at Bulleit Stadium, freshman running back Austin Oppel ran for a game-high 134 yards on 21 carries to lead visiting New Albany to a 35-20 victory against Seymour. He also made two receptions for 65 yards.
Oppel, who picked up the slack for the Bulldogs because New Albany senior running back Darquan Richardson did not play, scored three touchdowns. Two of his scores came on the ground and the other one was a reception.
Junior wide receiver Devon Gummer had a productive game for New Albany (5-3, 4-2 Hoosier Hills Conference). Gummer made three catches for 131 yards and two TDs.
The Owls (3-5, 2-4) grabbed a 7-0 lead at the 8:51 of the first quarter when quarterback Alan Perry had a 20-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs answered with two long TD passes by junior Dylan Clark. He connected with Gummer on an 80-yard touchdown with 7:26 left in the opening period, tying the score at seven. Then at the 2:58 mark, Clark found Oppel on a 63-yard TD toss to put New Albany up 14-7.
A 39-yard touchdown catch by Gummer and a 1-yard TD scamper by Oppel in the second gave the Dogs a 28-7 halftime advantage. With New Albany leading 28-14 in the fourth, Oppel got the Bulldog lead back to 21 with a 1-yard TD run with 3:13 left in regulation.
Clark was 5-of-9 passing for 196 yards with no interceptions. Perry completed 18-of-29 passes for 259 yards and no picks and had a team-high 121 rushing yards on 19 carries. Teammate Tyler Bullard made seven receptions for 113 yards.

VOLLEYBALL: Pioneers sweep Bulldogs in sectional; Breeding’s 35-year career ends at NA

By GREG BURTON
Special to Southern Indiana Preps
NEW ALBANY—One streak continued at 32. Another ended at 35.
The Class 4A No. 3 Providence Pioneers matched up with New Albany Thursday night in The Doghouse in the first round of the Class 4A New Albany Sectional. The match was a bittersweet one for each coach involved.
Providence coach Terri Purichia advanced with a three-set sweep of the host Bulldogs. The victory moved Providence to 33-1 on the season and extended the Pioneers’ winning streak to 32 straight matches, a school record. The Pioneers won 25-11, 25-12, 25-11.
Purichia was obviously pleased with the win, but did not look forward to playing New Albany.
The reason was simple: New Albany coach John Breeding had already announced his retirement from coaching the Bulldogs after 35 years. A loss in the tournament meant his time was finished at that point. Purichia did not savor facing an emotional New Albany team, and having her team putting an end to Breeding’s time.
“I was just a smidge disappointed when I saw the draw because we were in a really tough position, having to face that team in what could possibly have been John’s last match,” said Purichia. “I was really torn about that because I have really great respect for John Breeding as a coach and as a man.”
Breeding was emotional afterwards, but also very proud of his team.
“It’s over for me now. It’s pretty tough. It’s time and I’ve got all kinds of emotions,” he said.
The first half of the first set saw New Albany play its best. Although Providence never trailed, the Bulldogs stayed close early. After a service error by Providence, New Albany trailed just 10-7.
“It was intense,” said Purichia. “I knew that they were going to come out smoking guns, and that’s what they did. They had a great crowd and great energy, and it took us awhile to get into our rhythm. His (Breeding’s) team played so hard in that first set.”
Providence kicked into gear at that point and outscored New Albany 15-4 to end the first set. At one point, the Pioneers reeled off six consecutive points on sophomore Ceci Rush’s service, effectively putting the game away.
The biggest hitter for the Pioneers in the first set was Marissa Hornung, who had seven kills. The senior finished the night with 12 kills. Her sister Ali, a freshman, led the team with 13 kills. Teammate Courtney Glotzbach also recorded double digit kills with 10.
The second set the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. New Albany clawed its way back into the set at 9-5. But once again Providence answered with a run, this time 5-0 on the serve of Lilly Bivens.
Bivens had an outstanding night in setting up the big hitters. She finished with 42 assists.
Providence had another run a short while later on Maggie Purichia’s serve to make the score 21-8, and the Pioneers were on their way to the 25-12 set victory.
New Albany (20-14) opened the third set on an ace by Bree Martin for a 1-0 lead. This was the only lead the Bulldogs had the entire night.
The Pioneers struck back quickly and removed any remaining suspense. A five-point rally on the serve of Rush stretched the lead to 11-3. Later, Madison Kruer’s serve produced a four-point rally, giving the Pioneers a 20-7 advantage. Providence closed out the third set 25-11.
One of the things Providence worked hard to do was to prevent New Albany senior Allyson Cathey from taking over the match. They were effective at doing this. Cathey ended up with 11 kills.
“We could not let Allyson have the kind of game like she had the first time they played us, where I think she had something like 17 kills,” said Coach Purichia. “She was just a monster, and she has the ability to beat you single-handedly.
“Two things we felt like we had to do better than New Albany, and that was serve and pass. We focused on our serving and passing. No matter who we play, that is what is going to win it or lose it. Tonight our serving was really good, and our passing was really good. That opens up a lot of doors. We have some girls up front who can really hit the ball, and if we can get them the ball, then they can take care of it.”
Breeding liked the way his team played, despite the sweep.
“Here is what I was proud of - we played hard to the very end, and that’s what we talked about, play with pride and play with heart, never give up.
“Since the beginning of the year, we’ve come a long, long way. We’ve played well the last two weeks. I’m so proud of the kids tonight. I know the score does not say this. But as a coach, I know when they’re playing hard. They didn’t pout, they didn’t fight with each other, they fought hard to the very end, and that’s all you can ask for.”
For Terri Purichia, moving on, advancing is much more important than 32 wins in a row.
“I just try to focus on the very next one,” she said. “I’m not really very good at keeping track of that stuff. It doesn’t mean a whole lot to me. I think it’s important for our fans, but those things are not motivation for me.”
Her team’s accomplishments this year has surprised even her.
“I never thought the season would go like this with the team that I have, and the youth we have on this team. I’m so proud of them. They keep setting the bar higher, and then they smash it and keep raising it. The pride that I have with this team is overwhelming.”
Providence will play Floyd Central in the sectional semifinals at approximately 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
