BASEBALL: Red Devils knock off top-ranked Jasper 8-2

JEFFERSONVILLE – Jeffersonville got a solid pitching performance from senior Cam Northern and three-hit games from juniors Bailey Falkenstein and Gabe Bierman in an 8-2 upset win over Class 3A No. 1 Jasper last Friday at Don Poole Field. The Wildcats (12-2) had their 10-game winning streak end.
Northern collected a complete-game victory to improve his record to 2-1. The two runs (one earned) he allowed came in the top of the seventh inning after the Red Devils (7-6) built an 8-0 lead.
Northern, who will walk on to the Purdue University football team this fall, surrendered five hits and one walk. He struck out seven.
Bierman went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Falkenstein was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Jeff sophomore Drew Taylor wound up 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Jeff plated three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0. Senior Mike Minton put the Red Devils up 1-0 with an RBI single. Fellow senior Bennie Day upped the Jeff advantage to two runs as he came home as part of a double steal. Minton then scored on a Falkenstein single.
The Devils tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor led off the inning with a triple, and Falkenstein knocked him in with an RBI base hit. Red Devil sophomore Jack Ellis made the score 6-0 later in the frame with a two-run double. Jeff scored twice in the sixth.
Jasper senior Jared Sermersheim went 2-for-3 with a double. Wildcat starter Jacob Lents got his first loss of the season. In 2 1/3 innings of work, Lents surrendered three runs (all earned) on four hits and five walks.
