BASEBALL: Jeff downs Floyd in HHC first round in eight 3-2

By KEVIN HARRIS
FLOYDS KNOBS – Senior Mike Minton came through in the clutch for the Jeffersonville Red Devils on Monday night at Highlander Field in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.
Minton collected a game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to give Jeff a 3-2 win over archrival Floyd Central.
The Red Devils (10-8) will travel to another rival for Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal at Mt. Tabor Field, as they face New Albany (10-6). The Bulldogs won their opening-round contest Monday at Seymour 7-2. New Albany defeated Jeff on April 19 at Don Poole Field 3-1.
Jeff junior Gabe Bierman led off the top of the eighth with a base hit. With two out, Minton delivered a bloop single into right field to plate Bierman from second base off Highlander reliever Brayden Edwards.
Floyd’s Trevor Clark started the bottom half with a single, but the Highlanders (11-7) did not do anything after that.
Floyd Central drew first blood in the bottom of the first. Dalton Drexler came home on a sacrifice fly by Max Baumann to put the Highlanders up 1-0.
The Devils scored two runs in the top of the second to take a one-run lead, as both Bierman and senior Bennie Day drove in runs.
The Highlanders tied the score at two in the bottom of the fifth. Aaron Brown began the frame with a double, then scored later in the inning on an RBI single by Alex Lozado.
Jeff starter Cam Northern pitched all eight innings to earn the victory, improving his record to 3-1. The senior yielded two earned runs on six hits and three walks. Northern struck out five Floyd batters.
The Highlanders will visit Seymour (8-7) on Wednesday in a HHC consolation semifinal.
