SEYMOUR – New Albany concluded its regular season Thursday
night at Scott Gym, defeating Hoosier Hills Conference rival Seymour 57-53.
Northern Kentucky University signee Chyna Anthony was one of
four Bulldogs (15-6, 5-2 HHC) who finished in double figures. The 6-foot-1
senior scored a team-high 14 points.
Senior guard Earlean Davis and sophomore guard Alayasia
Douglas each tallied 13 points for New Albany. Also for the Bulldogs, junior
guard Julyen Condra wound up with 11 points and senior guard Marissa Jones
continued her efficient job of distributing the ball with nine assists.
New Albany pulled out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter
and was up 30-26 at halftime. The Bulldogs lost the lead to the Owls (15-7,
3-3) for a segment of the fourth, but bounced back to earn their fifth victory
in the last six contests.
“I thought we came out with great
purpose on both ends of the floor. Then we lost ourselves a little bit and
started going back to bad habits,” New Albany head coach Tammy Geron said. “However,
I thought we played more with a purpose throughout the game tonight and handled situations better. We played
with the lead most of the game and then lost the lead in the fourth
quarter. We never lost our heads, though, and continued to battle.
“Earlean Davis and Julyen Condra
did a great job on both ends of the floor tonight. Marissa Jones finished with nine assists
and Chyna connected on huge baskets at critical times during the game. We
also got great play from sophomore Alayasia Douglas. Alayasia did a nice
job penetrating the zone and getting the ball into the paint. It is always
good to get a win on the road in conference play and to finish the season with
15 wins collectively is a goal we had at the beginning of the season.”
It is the third time in Geron’s six seasons as New Albany’s head
coach that she has guided the Bulldogs to at least 15 victories. New Albany
will face either Jennings County (9-14) or Floyd Central (13-10) in the Class
4A Floyd Central Sectional semifinals at 6 p.m. next Friday.
Seymour seniors Lauren James and Kayla Griffin scored 16 and 15
points, respectively.
