GIRLS’ HOOPS: New Albany’s Anthony makes Indiana All-Star team

By KEVIN HARRIS
INDIANAPOLIS – New Albany senior Chyna Anthony was named to the Indiana All-Star team Wednesday. She is the fourth Bulldog to be named an All-Star and the first to make the squad since Abby Scharlow in 2000.
The 6-foot-1 center averaged 13.2 points per game last season, helping the Bulldogs post a 15-7 record. Anthony earned a spot on this season’s All-Hoosier Hills Conference first team and made the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Large School (Class 3A-4A) Senior All-State squad.
Anthony had a solid season after suffering a leg injury while competing in the Class 2A Floyd Central girls’ soccer sectional last fall.
“It feels amazing and it is such an honor as a player to be chosen to represent our state and Southern Indiana,” Anthony said. “I think it finally hit me (Wednesday) night and I was overcome with emotions just thinking about my high school journey and how much basketball has molded me. This past season when I got injured during soccer, I wasn’t sure I was going to get to play. When I knew I was coming back, I realized this was it and wanted to leave it all on the floor. To finish my high school career on this note is so surreal.”
New Albany head coach Tammy Geron was happy for Anthony being selected to the All-Star team.
“Being an All-Star is the biggest honor an individual player can receive in the state besides being named Indiana Miss Basketball,” Geron said. “Chyna deserves it. She has worked so hard on and off the floor. She will be the fourth (All-Star) in our program’s history and will get to hang her jersey in our gym. What an honor and memorable moment for Chyna, our program and our school.”
Anthony has signed a national letter of intent to play NCAA Division I basketball next season at Northern Kentucky University.
The Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Series will have its first game at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The second and final contest will be the following day (Sunday, June 11) at 1 p.m. at Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown, Ky.
