BOYS’ HOOPS: Owls stun Jeff in OT in Seymour Sectional opener 54-53

By KEVIN HARRIS
SEYMOUR – Jeffersonville’s season came to an end Tuesday night at Scott Gym, as it got upset by Seymour in the opener of the Class 4A Seymour Sectional in overtime 54-53. The Owls (9-14) will play Floyd Central (18-4) in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.
With the Red Devils (14-11) up 49-46, the Owls’ Tyler Bloom hit his third 3-pointer of the fourth quarter with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 49 and eventually send the game to overtime.
Jeff held a 52-51 lead with nine seconds remaining in the extra session. But Alan Perry gave Seymour the lead for good with a three-point play to put the Owls up 54-52.
Junior Bailey Falkenstein led the Red Devils with 17 points. Jeff sophomore Joe LaGrange scored nine points, while Red Devil freshman Tre Coleman grabbed eight rebounds.
Perry tallied a game-high 18 points and Bloom chipped in 17.
Red Devils’ head coach Joe Luce was not on the bench for the game. The Courier-Journal in Louisville reported that Luce was placed on administrative leave for Tuesday’s game. Jeff assistant coach and former Red Devil standout Sherron Wilkerson ran the team in Luce’s absence.
It was a roller-coaster campaign for the Red Devils. Jeff started the season winning seven of its first 10 games. But after that, the Red Devils lost five of their next six contests to even their record at 8-8. That stretch included a four-game losing streak.
Jeff bounced back by winning six in a row to improve to 14-8. But last week, the Devils ended the regular season with an 85-79 overtime loss at Class 3A No. 10 Salem and a 73-52 setback at Class 4A No. 8 Castle.
Jeff said goodbye to two seniors in Mike Minton and Cam Northern.
